You can walk up to the veterans floor and request records on the spot. Be prepared for a wait though.

I had a campaign ribbon that was not on m DD-214, and did an in person request, filling out the form on the spot. It took almost 3 years to receive my medal (Naval Expeditionary), and an updated cop of my DD-214.
