I might look at online reviews, which I often do before deciding to get a book.

I will now recommend a couple of books to you. A series by a Canadian writer, Iona Whishaw that revolve around an English woman, Lane Winslow, who has relocated to a small town in British Columbia shortly after the end of WWII. In the first one, a body shows up on her property and of course there is some sort of connection to her. So far there are 8 books in the series, and I understand a 9th one will be out next year.

I will also recommend, in case you haven't discovered him yet, the novels of Anthony Horowitz. I've only read about three, but they are all amazing.
