Hey Kiddo by Jarrett Krosoczka.

This is not a "light" or easy read. The author/illustrator discusses how he was born to a heroin addict and an irresponsible father. Mom cleans up enough that he could live with her as a wee lad...but soon enough, things went the kind of sideways they always do with an addict. Enter: Her Greatest Generation parents who took the mother to court to get custody of him, never mind how they have problems of their own.

We follow his story about this Dysfunction-R-Us family and how art became not only an outlet for him, but a passion as well, all the way to his high school graduation.

I rated it a 5 at my Goodreads page.
