Rays Thwart Astros' Comeback and Reach Their Second World Series [View all]

With a victory over Houston in Game 7 of the A.L.C.S., Tampa Bay avoided becoming the second team to lose a seven-game series after taking a 3-0 lead.

The Tampa Bay Rays escaped from the brink on Saturday, reaching their second World Series with a 4-2 victory over the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series in San Diego.

The Rays, who had the A.L.’s best record in the abbreviated regular season, at 40-20, had been in danger of joining the 2004 Yankees as the only teams in baseball history to lose a best-of-seven series after taking a 3-0 lead. The Astros came up one win short, leaving the Boston Red Sox as the only team to complete such a comeback.

Tampa Bay’s only previous World Series appearance came in 2008, when the Rays fell in five games to the Philadelphia Phillies. They will face the winner of Game 7 of the National League Championship Series on Sunday between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves.
