Any baseball fans know why MLB increased the size of the bases? [View all]

I haven't heard of any big outcry that the bases were too small. They're now to be the size of pizza boxes, and won't that give an advantage to a runner going to first trying to beat out a grounder as he'll get there a split second quicker?
