(17-10)
NASHVILLE, Tenn. –- The Raiders spent the season’s first two games in a shootout. Offense -- or terrible defense, for the purists -- won the day against New Orleans and Atlanta.
Sunday’s game against Tennessee had a dramatically different tone.
The Raiders defense, ridiculed all week for a terrible start, looked whole a lot better against the Titans. That unit created turnovers and played much better pass defense.
The NFL’s top offense couldn’t pull away despite several opportunities to do so, keeping this one tight down the stretch.
Raiders at Titans: Highlights, score, and recap
The improving Tennessee Titans looked to make it two straight wins when they hosted the explosive Oakland Raiders on Sunday.
The Tennessee Titans entered 2016 with a combined 5-27 record the past two seasons. Over that time, they’ve gone through two head coaches in Ken Whisenhunt (3-20 during his short stint) and current sideline leader Mike Mularkey.
The Oakland Raiders are coming off a 7-9 showing, a four-win improvement from the previous year when the club finished 3-13. But lest we forget that this franchise hasn’t enjoyed a winning campaign since reaching Super Bowl XXXVII more than a decade ago.
Both of these franchises are led by young quarterbacks in Oakland’ Derek Carr and Tennessee’s Marcus Mariota. Each is hoping to get their club back to the playoffs, a place the Raiders haven’t been since 2002 and the Titans since ’08.
Barring a tie, one of these clubs will be off to a 2-1 start. For Mularkey and company, that would be a solid beginning. For the Silver and Black, the expectations are far higher than in recent years. The team stubbed its toes last week at home against the Atlanta Falcons. A defensive unit that added a lot of talent this offseason has been an early disappointment.
Can the Raiders grab another road win and prevail in Nashville for a second straight season (Oakland rallied for a 24-21 victory in 2015)? This is a very intriguing game between a pair of potential up-and-comers.
