My husband's family has familial ALS. Most who have been afflicted lived for 3 or 4 years. When I met my husband he told me that if he got it he was going to kill himself. I didn't understand until I met his brother who had just been diagnosed. I saw his brother every couple of months because we didn't live in the same city. Each time there was marked decline. He lived 4 years. He and his family were on such a roller coaster. They were always hearing about different treatments and possible cures, but ultimately nothing worked. Now we've heard that my husband's nephew has it. It's just heartbreaking.
