(21,046 posts)Like attempting to socialize at a book club where people have defended racism, saying "She's not from Texas" like that is an excuse to hate Hispanics, condemned Spain as being "lazy socialists because they take naps", and often bring up their religion whether it is part of the discussion or not.
I've realized that the people here are not interested in discussing any deep ideas in books; their world is Christian and Republican, and they have no concept or interest in anything else. Ignorant and proud of it. Even though they may have some college, they are quite incurious. They want everyone to conform and agree with them.
And I've been afraid to say anything to them that does not agree with that world view. I've decided to give up as it is hopeless. I guess I'll have to be a hermit & do my solitary activities and not attempt conversation with anyone around here (except spouse).
It's best not to engage with these people as I have already had one screaming angry white guy Christian go off at me in Walgreen's. He butted into a conversation I was having with my husband about the effectiveness of glucosamine, which hubby equated with the effectiveness of prayer, in his experience. Angry White Guy walked away, very upset. No facts in his world. Said he would pray for me.
The next guy behind him said, loudly, to the lady at the pharmacy counter, "I am so mad I wanna throw things at my TeeVee". This was the Friday after the Democratic Convention finished. I guess this guy couldn't handle positive people telling America that we can solve our problems.
It is incredibly frustrating to have NO FRIENDS at all where I live.
