So it isnt as deadly as you thought as you were plunging in? I think your subconscious is trying to tell you, "this too shall pass," and "it isn't as bad and worrisome as you're making it out to be." I really think your subconscious is trying to comfort you and help you relax, take one day (one stroke in swimming) at a time.

Here's another idea: you're off the road or path that you saw for your life. It feels tragic for you and you want to get back on the path you are supposed to be on. Does your work make you happy, or does it feel "shallow"? Look for key words that have other reflective meanings. Puns count, too.
