Many publishers of the scientific literature operate on a for-profit basis. This parasitizes the tradition that scientist provide community service through volunteer peer review. Eslevier is among the biggest offenders of the for-profit publishers - Wiley is bad as well. Actions like this walkout are good, but as long as we keep submitting to journals that use these publishers and continue to provide free peer review to them, the situation isn't likely to change.
