One might not, however, be aware that in the dead of night this last December the City Council of Torquay (on the 'English Riviera') "without consultation or notice" sent in crews to chop down 40 palms which had been planted in 1924 as part of the "...restoration of the gardens ahead of its 100th anniversary next year"
The Guardian reports that "The felling of 40 trees in Torquay, Devon, has provoked a furious public outcry and accusations that the council has wrought a “soul-destroying”, “total destruction” of the seaside front."

Torquay (on the English Channel at 50N is just a Bit Further North than either Saint Johns' Newfoundland (47N) or Halifax, Nova Scotia (45N) —neither of which brings Palm Trees to mind
