EASTER Island's mysterious stone head monoliths are the remnants of a long-lost civilisation and have baffled the scientific community for decades. That is, until now.

Scientists studying the geographical distribution of stone heads across the island of Rapa Nui, Easter Island, have proposed a new theory for their origin. An Easter Island study published this month claims to have found a link between the ancient statues and the island’s sources of fresh water. The Rapa Nui stone heads, dotting the landscape of Easter Island to the east of the coast of Chile, are the remnants of an ancient Polynesian culture. Countless Easter Island theories over the years have tried to explain the statues’ mysterious origin and purpose.

The so-called Moai monoliths are believed to date between the years 1,000 and 1,500 of the Common Era (CE).

The hand-carved statues, some of which are as tall as 32ft (10m), were at times considered a symbol of power, a representation of Polynesian ancestors or religious in purpose.

Researchers from the United States and New Zealand have now proposed the statues were concentrated around very specific locations on Easter Island.
