20. When "Rome" was on HBO...

I was living in Alexandria. Would downl...er, watch the show. Then go out and try to find real places around the city that sort of matched what they were covering in the series. A fun exercise.

The battle where Julius Caesar nearly drowned was easy. That happened around the Pharos Lighthouse. Marked today by a big 15th-century fort built right on the ruins of the Lighthouse.

One thing that bugged me, and I could be mistaken since it's been a while: when they showed Cleopatra and Marc Antony in her palace, it always appeared to be set in a desert. Lots of sand and desolation.

Maybe that was a secondary palace or something. But AFAIK, they were holed up at the Caesareum - the palace she named for Julius Caesar, which was right in the middle of the city.

In the photo below, the Caesareum was to the right, where all those palm trees stand. Nowadays the site is a public park and major streetcar interchange called Ramleh Square. Just out of frame is a large statue of revolutionary leader Sa'ad Zaghloul. And behind him, on the same plinth, a big statue of Cleopatra:
