A May Day demonstration in Old Montreal was brought to an end in little more than an hour Wednesday night after police moved in and made about 300 arrests.

The demonstration was organized by CLAC, the anti-capitalist group, and began at Montreal’s City Hall with a march planned to head toward the exclusive Club 357C on De la Commune St. The club has been mentioned often during the Charbonneau Commission as a gathering place for meetings where city officials allegedly discussed matters like bid-rigging with contractors and engineers.

More than 500 people were estimated to have attended the demonstration, which the Montreal police declared illegal shortly after the group left City Hall and headed toward the club. The police declared the assembly was in violation of the city’s P-6 bylaw outlawing large public assemblies in which organizers do not submit a parade route to police at least 24 hours before their march.

The Montreal police also alleged, on their Twitter account, that some demonstrators committed illegal acts by striking officers with sticks and throwing billiard balls at them.
