I spent my entire childhood spending my weekends washing and ironing my father and brothers shirts. I learned to cook and clean and did it all, every weekend. No allowance, it was expected that I do it all as "training" to be a good wife.

My brothers got an allowance, they were occasionally expected to mow the yard. Occasionally. No matter, they always got an allowance because boys needed the money.
