(42,484 posts)I don't get those assholes, but I will say this, I've had Facebook for a few months now and have had to block 2 people for racism, made one general announcement that I don't tolerated it, I'm about to make another. My husband won't tolerate it. Period.
The thing is this, and here white privilege plays a part--we thought we knew these people, we assumed they weren't racist, or at least tried not to be, and then you see some foul crap on FB, then see the person in real life and confront them and hear "we've always talked like this" (my husband has a 30 year friendship--gone. They had never truly discussed race-- the guy's half Native American, so my husband assumed there wasn't racism)
Really? Not in front of me you haven't. These are mostly middle aged white men, but I'm looking with a jaundiced eye toward anyone who posts weird anti-Obama stuff, young or old. I'm not asking everybody to love the man, but he and his wife and family deserve respectful acknowledgment and respectful disagreement- if that's how you swing-- in my world.
As far as the covert racists around here and deniers of white privilege, they don't even make sense to me. I can't explain them or understand them. I just know if there are enemies to defeat, it's essence lies in whatever makes people think that way.
