Is not that he didn't mean it in "that way" but precisely that he did mean it in "that way." There is no disconnect here.

Kurt Vonnegut said it very nicely: "We are what we pretend to be. So we must be careful about what we pretend to be." You can take that as saying we become what we pretend or what we pretend is exactly what we always have been. I choose the latter.

It isn't about how the usage of this word gives birth to corruption and abuse. It's that underneath the usage of the word there already exists the corruption and abuse. I think that is the surest way to explain why there is no way to jokingly use epithets.
