I found this article most interesting because I witnessed this same kind of dynamic years ago when I worked at the shipyards in Norfolk. Sailors who would be off to sea for months at a time, multiple deployments, while their wives were left at home to take care of the kids, the house, the bills, often holding down a job of their own. Then daddy would suddenly show up again, sometimes a virtual stranger to his family and expect that upon crossing the threshold he was to be treated as king of the castle again. You could almost visualize the psychological whiplash going on with many of these women. Some could take it but many could not and I fully understood why.
