(14,177 posts)I think this is a big part of the problem of why people don't want to look at these kinds of threads. The survivors can be in deep denial (it wasn't that bad or it wasn't abuse) or just reading about it can be a trigger.
When the issue of how the NFL handles players accused of domestic made headlines with Rice and Peterson there were a lot of triggers for me. I know too well how this can play out over a lifetime. Neither I nor my siblings ever recovered from what we saw and what happened to us. It's not okay the scars are for life. Each of my siblings developed a substance abuse problem, I developed chronic insomnia and then chronic fatigue.
I think so many people struggle with the issue they have a tendency to want to look past it or put it in the past. I wish that I could, but even at my age I still have to deal with the effects every day.
