Steve Scalise, Constitutional Scholar? [View all]

Scalise, a victim of gun violence, spoke on FOX about the Second Amendment. In part, he said,

“It’s what our Founding Fathers envisioned. If you go and look at the writings of our Founding Fathers, they believe strongly in the rights of people to arm themselves for self-defense,” said Scalise. “And that’s something that’s still strong today, and you see threats against it.”

What the Founders envisioned? Except for the inconvenient fact that the Founders actually envisioned an armed militia, a well-regulated and state-based militia. And no standing army. And there was no national police force and very few local police forces.

I cannot imagine the Founders envisioning a society where a minority of terrified gun owners feel the need to own more and deadlier guns to defend themselves against all of their imagined enemies.

I cannot imagine the Founders envisioning a society where schools see the need for metal detectors and security guards to protect children from violent individuals who can easily obtain weapons of all types.

I cannot imagine the Founders envisioning a society where obtaining guns is easier than obtaining health care.
