Historically speaking, attacks with assault rifles have been stymied by individuals with pistols. The Tyler Tx courthouse would be an example. Trolley Square another.

Often the shooter will self-destruct upon encountering armed resistance, but even if they don't, as long as they are occupied by some form of armed resistance, it gives people time to get away, and SWAT time to arrive.

Tyler Tx being a primary example. Arroyo Sr. was prevented from shooting his kid by Mark Allen Wilson. Wilson himself was indeed killed, because Arroyo was wearing a bulletproof vest and flak jacket, but it saved the kid, halted the attack, and gave SWAT time to show up and put Arroyo down.

So I don't see where the logic concludes what you have assumed.

That said, I'm not convinced arming the school is a great idea. So far, actual police officers have lost guns in schools. (usually in the bathroom) and that is introducing a hazard to the situation.
