Right now you purchase permit lasts for 5 years.

Because the permit functions as a substitute for the instant background check at time of purchase a prohibited person can buy a gun if they had te permit before conviction.

In reality the check is nothing more than a revenue stream because the sheriff must grant purchase unless you are prohibited person. Technically the sheriff can do a mental health check but the state should already be providing that info to NICS.

I'm not really sure if the sheriff based handgun permit process does anything besides keep county sheriffs with a little more control.

Oh and look up the history of this law. It was designed to prevent blacks from buying handguns.
