North Carolina mayors and law enforcement helped block a dangerous NRA-backed attack on gun background checks from passing the General Assembly, as lawmakers stripped language from HB 937 that would have repealed the state's handgun permit requirement -- effectively eliminating background checks for private handgun sales.

ceonupe: But failed to close a loophole created by the permits .. Because the permit functions as a substitute for the instant background check at time of purchase a prohibited person can buy a gun if they had te permit before conviction.

.. you'd rather throw the baby out with the bath water? you'd rather have the nra version where no bg check required for private handgun sales?

The previous version of HB 937, which passed {NC}State Senate, would have repealed the state's requirement that all handgun purchases by private sellers undergo a background check -- creating easy access to guns for dangerous people who are currently unable to pass a background check.

ceonupe: In reality the check is nothing more than a revenue stream because the sheriff must grant purchase unless you are prohibited person. Technically the sheriff can do a mental health check but the state should already be providing that info to NICS.

Double double talk talk; if you consistently take the nra approach you really belong in Ft Gunsalot. I thought you were quitting the nra? are you still nra member? or just 'torn between two lovers'?

ceonupe: Oh and look up the history of this law. It was designed to prevent blacks from buying handguns.

Could you save us the bother & post what you're talking about? the usual protocol? Thanks.
A Jim Crow law eh? yeah it certainly could prevent blacks from buying handguns, as well as whites, hispanics, asians.
