Blumenthal, Murphy announce the Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act [View all]
Hartford, CT - Flanked by advocates and police detectives, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) unveiled new federal legislation on Friday to close loopholes that leave domestic violence victims vulnerable to gun violence following the issuance of a temporary restraining order.
The Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act, co-sponsored by U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), would establish consistent, nationwide protections, prohibiting the sale to and possession of guns and ammunition by those subject to a temporary restraining order.
The presence of a gun in domestic violence situations increases the risk of homicide for women by 500 percent. In 2010, of all the women killed by a firearm in the United States, almost two-thirds of them were killed by an intimate partner.
Victims who seek temporary restraining orders do so under life and death circumstances. Unfortunately, in many instances, our laws fail to adequately protect these victims at the moment they are most vulnerablewhen a temporary restraining order has first been issued. The presence of a gun at this highly volatile moment can be catastrophic. My bill, the Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act, would make it a federal crime for those subject to a temporary restraining order to possess a gun. This is common sense legislation that will save lives, Blumenthal said....
