It's people like you who will eventually defeat the NRA and their supporters politically and socially. At present the USA is the most armed and dangerous society in the "civilized" world, but the NRA apologists would have us believe that a minor reduction in murders is cause for celebration, and not more regulation.

The only problem with that false equivalency is that crime rates are being reduced in almost all categories due to improved communications between law enforcement agencies, and other improvements in police resources and tactics. The ease of acquiring a gun in this country allows criminals to bypass any sort of background checks, so registration and tracking is a top priority.

The use of a gun in the commission of a crime should carry heavy penalties, even if no one was injured. Negligent use or storage of a weapon should carry severe penalties as well.
