5 kids injured in basement shooting were hit by birdshot

The five children involved in an accidental shooting Tuesday were injured by a shotgun containing birdshot, Milwaukee police said Wednesday.

The shooting occurred about 6 p.m. in the basement of a residence in the 2900 block of N. 28th St. Police said multiple people handled the weapon and it discharged, causing minor injures to five of the people in the room, ages 11 to 17.

The police department's Central Investigations Division is continuing to conduct interviews to determine who possessed the shotgun, as many of those involved have not been forthcoming, Deputy Inspector Michael J. Brunson Sr. said in a news release.

All five who were wounded are expected to recover from their injuries.
