A responsible, gun owning Kentucky mom stepped outside, leaving her 5-year-old son alone with his new birthday present a brand new, shiny loaded .22-cal. rifle and his 2-year-old sister... mom was outside just long enough for her son to fatally shoot his sister with his new present.
I think mom, ostensibly ~25, should be charged with at least negligent something or other, neg m/s or homicide, for it can't be argued this was not negligence on her part.
.. this is how it's gone for past 50 years or more: Friendly gun owner negligently responsible for his gun killing or wounding someone(s), then the shots fired, then the pending charges are met by gunworld with the 'gunowner has suffered enough, how can you be so cruel to charge him when he's so heartbroken/remorseful/upset?' Yeah, & so he/she walks, often with only a court admonishment about how guns should always be treated carefully & never left in the hands of young children, shame shame.
Duh, mom, you killed your kid, you killed your kid, that's it in a nutshell.
You apparently bought the gun, condoned it as a gift, gave your son the rifle, a LOADED rifle, left him alone with a 2 yr old, & duh, your worst nightmare comes true. Should we be sorry for you? Should we say to the court 'she's suffered enough leave her alone?' And the legacy for the 5yo son, he was the gunman, should we be sorry for you?
What do you think mom? should you just be given a stern admonishment from some perturbed judge?
True, your pain & suffering have just begun & will last forever; still up to the state to do something more than wristslapping, to make lar-gos think harder when their guns are around children, that they might go to prison.
{police} added that in the area it is not uncommon for parents to give their young children weapons. In this part of the country, its not uncommon for a 5-year-old to have a gun or for a parent to pass one down to their kid, he said.
Not much is tackier than giving a gun to a kid under 10 for a present, imo. And what the cop says above is more the reaon that mom should be given a more severe punishment than admonishment & 'she's suffered enough...'.
birthday boy: Mommy! Look what I gots! A GUN!
mom: Oh what a lucky boy you are!
