Why can't we have nice things? [View all]
People have the right to openly carry long guns in many states, a law dates back a hundred years and that was intended to let people in rural areas have rifles and shotguns for protection of self and livestock. What do Gun Enthusiasts do? They strap a loaded assault weapon on and parade around grocery stores and family restaurants scaring hell out of normal people.
States grant people the right of concealed carry. Gun Enthusiasts piss and moan until they are allowed to carry the guns openly on their hips so they can intimidate everyone else and broadcast their fantasy of getting into a gunfight and saving everyone. Except everyone gives them a wide berth so as not be shot by the bad guy with a gun who will shoot the open carry good guy first.
The Houston Zoo is a place where families with little children go to have a fun outing and enjoy a day of looking at the animals and relaxation. The Zoo has a sign asking gun owners to leave their concealed carry weapons home. A second amendment lawyer who makes a living defending people who discharge their weapons in public sues the Zoo forcing them to allow concealed carry guns (and as of January 1, 2016 open carry guns) around little kids and their parents.
Guns are allowed in National Parks after years of being restricted to National Forests. What do Gun Enthusiasts do? They begin to shoot up the place, taking old refrigerators and other large pieces of junk to the parks to shoot up, set up impromptu firing ranges that cross roads and trails and, at least one of them, shoots a retired man about to roast marsh mallows with his grand kids.
That's why we can't have nice things. The gun nuts fuck it up for everybody else.
