1. Shooting range

When I worked for the Forest Service, I had to patrol an area that included an informal shooting range. It was so heavily used that several fir trees of two to three feet diameter had been felled by gunfire. Eventually, a guy shot and killed a man "...to see how it felt..." and they closed the place to shooting. What made me nervous was that the line of fire was across a road, just as you say. When I drove up there, I had to stop, get out of my truck, talk to the shooters to make sure they would hold their fire, then drive through.
