His wound isn't that bad, and the picture is not gruesome. They cleaned him up pretty well before they snapped the photo.
Anyway, the link is for an article from "Concealed Nation," an organization that promoted the freedom to carry guns. They are mocking poor Cody because he made all kinds of dumb mistakes, mistakes Concealed Nation warns people never to make. They are very strong on promoting carrying your concealed handgun the correct way, safety first, getting appropriate training, and so on. Which is all fine, except they're pretending there is a portion of the population just too stupid, or just too deranged or maybe both stupid and deranged, to even own a gun, let alone carry it around in public. These are exactly the kind of people who are drawn to firearms, and envision themselves shooting a terrorist and saving lives at the shopping mall. Stuff like that.
That's the problem with firearms, particularly handguns and assault weapons. They fascinate some people, and not just the way stamps fascinate philatelists. I know a few "gun nuts," and most are just what you would call "enthusiasts." The spend too much time and money buying firearms, reloading their own ammunition, reading various publications, etc. But they're into guns the way people are into model trains or riding roller coasters, or any other hobby. But there is this one guy. He definitely sees himself dropping the Hammer of Righteousness on some evildoer someday. That's OK, you say, because he will never get the opportunity. Yes, but he will make the opportunity. He will make the necessary mental adjustments to transform some ordinary citizen into the al Qaida Avenger, and he will open fire. And there's nothing we can do, because our mental health system is broken, and we can't identify guys like him, and we probably couldn't deny him his guns anyway, because the NRA sticks up for people like him.
