There are less than a hundred members and they are journalists, not filmmakers. They are notorious for weird nominations, like "Man in the Moon" with Jim Carrey as Andy Kauffman being classified as a COMEDY. It's really not that prestigious and since there are so few voting members, it's prone to corruption. Sharon Stone got a nomination for The Muse after she gave gold watches to all the HFP members.

At least the Academy Awards Best Director category is voted on by directors only, both for the nominations and the final award. The Director's Guild Awards are also prestigious for the same reason. The DGA noms will be announced Jan 11th and the Oscars on Jan 23rd.

But I do think the GG's are fun to watch, since people associated with a particular film or show are seated together at big tables and the champagne flows freely.
