Made an exception for Letters from Iwo Jima, solely because it’s told from the Japanese perspective of the battle (even having all but a couple of scenes spoken in Japanese), and stars Nino from the Japanese boy band Arashi. Eastwood also told the story from the American POV, but the Japanese version is far better. Nino is terrific as the baker who has zero interest in being a hero, only wanting to survive the war so he can go home to his wife and newborn daughter. I think Ken Watanabe is the other lead, and he’s great in everything he does.

That the film pissed off conservafilth for the sympathetic take on the Japanese in the battle makes it worth a look.
