Mr. Biden has nothing to gain from a debate. He has already demonstrated he is master of the situation.

In present circumstances, the victor does not share a stage with the defeated rival, in order to drive home the latter's insignificance. Sanders lacks the status to appear in any circumstance suggesting equality with Mr. Biden. Sanders pleading for an appearance on a stage with Mr. Biden only emphasizes his lower status, and when his pleas are ignored, Sanders status declines further. Sanders may dream of a forensic triumph, but that does not mean anyone is afraid he would have one. This is not even a question of avoiding risk for Mr. Biden. It is a question of manifesting status on the most basic level of primate competition for dominance. The degree to which elections turn on such basic, almost bodily considerations, is something intellectually driven persons fail to properly appreciate, and one which professional politicians have an instinctual feel for.

"From Bernie’s perspective, dropping out of a race once you have no chance of winning is peculiar behavior that can only be explained by the work of a hidden hand. For most politicians, though, it is actually standard operating procedure. Only Sanders seems to think the normal thing to do once voters have made clear they don’t want to nominate you is to continue campaigning anyway."

"When things are not called by their right names, what is said cannot make sense. When what is said does not make sense, what is planned cannot succeed. When plans do not succeed, people become uneasy. When people are uneasy, punishments do not fit crimes. When punishments do not fit crimes, people cannot know where to put hand or foot."

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
