(84,838 posts)I saw leadership. The people have loved her for decades. Over several generations. I will be sad when she leaves us. The word majesty fits her. To have an icon like that, connecting you to the ages of your countrys history and heritage, to embody the British identity like that.
Its something we in America dont have. Our leaders change at intervals. Our heads of state are installed by vote of the people and serve for a finite number of years. Theyre only temporary symbols of leadership and national identity.
But the monarchy of England is different. Living history and heritage and continuity that directly links to centuries past and, into the future - all the way to her great-grandchildren.
Her son and immediate heir (Prince Charles) wears a signet ring with a symbol that stands for I serve. I always had a soft spot in my heart for him in his awkward struggles, outshined and completely washed over by Princess Diana. I found myself sympathetic to him during all that while everybody else was busy swooning over her. HEs the one with the direct blood-connection to that amazing and storied heritage - from that amazing mother he has. (More or less that all the British people have.)
We do have that. On purpose. Our founders chose something different. But the Crown of England carries on. And the woman who still wears it can serve as a symbol of strength and constancy and stability and continuity for the whole world.
That Queen they have over there. Thats no mere woman. Thats a living INSTITUTION.
God save the Queen.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
