According to Mary Trump's book, his mother was warned not to have any more children after she gave birth to his closest sister because of her health, but she then went ahead and had Donald and his younger brother - so she was absent in his youngest years because she was hospitalized and nearly died. So he got no attention when he was at his youngest and has been looking for it ever since.
