I see him in some ways as a throwback to the late or even pre-war 1800s, expecting Americans would revel in 'doing good'. It is amazing how this moment has surfaced as Trump prepares to retake office. There could not be a starker contrast for Trump's demeanor, character, or methodology than President Carter and his 'malaise' speech.

I was in a bar drinking beer when he gave the speech. There were TVs on the wall, even back then. The patrons either ignored or ridiculed the speech, just like they ignored the lessons of 2017-2021 during this campaign year, 2024.
