Memo says the policy shift, which advocates call reckless, was designed to align with one of Trumps anti-trans orders
Adm. Rachel Levine portrait in the HHS building has been altered to show her pre trans name
Transgender health leaders name changed on her official HHS portrait : Shots - Health News https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2025/12/05/nx-s1-5633282/transgender-rachel-levine-portrait-hhs
As you walk down a particular hallway on the seventh floor of the Humphrey Building in Washington, D.C., you'll find a line of photographic portraits of all the people from years past who have led the Public Health Corps at the federal Department of Health and Human Services.
Only one of those portraits is of a transgender person: Adm. Rachel Levine, who served for four years as President Biden's assistant secretary for health. She was the first transgender person to win Senate confirmation, and her portrait has been displayed in the hallway since soon after she was confirmed in 2021. The role is a four-star admiral position in charge of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service.
Levine's official portrait was recently altered, a spokesperson for HHS confirmed to NPR. A digital photograph of the portrait in the hallway obtained by NPR shows that Levine's previous name is now typed below the portrait, under the glass of the frame.
Levine responds
"During the federal shutdown, the current leadership of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health changed Admiral Levine's photo to remove her current legal name and use a prior name," says Adrian Shanker, former deputy assistant secretary for health policy in the Biden administration who worked with Levine and is now her spokesperson. He called the move an act "of bigotry against her."
Howard's Appliance abruptly closes all Southern California stores
https://www.dailybreeze.com/2025/12/05/howards-appliance-abruptly-closes-southern-california-stores/amp/A week after Black Friday sales, the nearly 80-year-old Howards Appliance chain is shuttering all of its Southern California stores, offering only a days notice to employees and nothing to customers with orders in limbo.
The notice, signed by Isaiah Padilla, the logistics general manager for Howards, said the company was closing its business operations, effective Dec. 6, due to circumstances beyond our control.
The company began in 1946 as a radio repair shop in San Gabriel and later evolved into one of Southern Californias leading independent appliance retailers, expanding into televisions and mattresses.
Howards was based in La Habra for years before consolidating operations in 2024 to a new headquarters in City of Industry. It was acquired in April by S5 Equity, a private equity firm based in Newport Beach, to help with the cash-starved companys turnaround.
S5 Equity Managing Director Baudelio Bueno did not return a phone call Friday seeking comment.
Darrel Issa considers running for office in Texas due to Calif prop 50

After Proposition 50 passed, which sliced up GOP congressional districts in California, Rep. Darrell Issa said he wasnt leaving.
Im not going anywhere. Ill continue to represent the people of California regardless of their party or where they live, the 72-year-old Republican said in a statement sent to SFGATE after the Nov. 4 vote. Im not quitting on California. And neither should anyone else, he reiterated at the time.
With the passage of Prop. 50, Californias congressional districts are now completely rearranged and five heavily Republican seats have been changed to favor incoming Democratic challengers. For Issa, who was first elected to Congress in 2001, his post-passage statement was a reflection of how consequential the redistricting ballot measure would be to the longevity of his job.
Yet despite having insisted he was not going anywhere just one month ago, Punchbowl News reported on Monday that Issa is planning to leave California politics and is toying with a congressional run in Texas next year instead.

Transgender woman records conversation of surgical staff that occured while she was unconscious
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/01/nyregion/transgender-patient-records-during-cancer-surgery.htmlIt frustrated her that she was unconscious at the most crucial moments as the surgeon removed each cancerous mass. What if the surgeon said something important, a stray comment that no one bothered to tell her about after the anesthesia wore off? She decided to record her next surgery, on March 7, 2022, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the renowned Manhattan hospital.
_____
The surgeon removed part of her lung. She did not get around to playing the recording until a few weeks later. Though the audio was muffled, she could follow some of what the surgical team was saying before the procedure began. Someone was going out for coffee did anyone want something from Starbucks? The conversation then shifted.
still has man parts.
It seemed to Ms. Capasso that they were talking about her genitalia.
On the recording, the health care workers express a variety of opinions about transgender identity more generally. Not that its not right, but one person can be heard saying. I dont get any of it, another says.
And in the middle of the conversation, one person suggests updating Ms. Capassos medical file. Yeah, it needs to say male, the person says.
Ms. Capasso said it appeared that hospital staff had in fact changed her electronic medical records, all while she was unconscious.

Bad jobs report caused by "Democrat's shutdown", deportations -- not tariffs, Lutnick says
https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/03/lutnick-jobs-tariffs-shutdown-immigration-adp.html"No, no, its not tariffs, Lutnick said when asked whether President Donald Trumps import duties explained Wednesday mornings report from ADP, which revealed an unexpected 32,000-worker drop in the labor market.
That decline, a sharp turnabout from October, was led by businesses with fewer than 50 workers, which saw their payroll numbers sink by 120,000. Larger businesses, meanwhile, reported a net gain of 90,000 workers.
Remember, you had the Democratic shutdown, right? And what do you think happens to small business? The people who do business with the U.S. government, they know theyre not getting paid, so they sort of slow down their projects, Lutnick said.
So you saw a little bit, even, of construction small business down. So the Democratic shutdown hurt the numbers, he said.

Terry Moran "We are all living inside the mind of this broken, ferocious man"
Dragging America Down to His LevelNo human being should be called "garbage." But Trump's second term is trashing our country
In the Cabinet Room yesterday, President Trump said that Somali-Americans are garbage and that he wants them out of the United States.
No president has ever spoken like this to the American people. Not one. Weve had good presidents and bad presidents. Great leaders and party hacks. Crooks, liars, and lechers; brave heroes, visionaries, kind men. None of them were saints; each brought to the office their unique strengthsand their inner demons, too.
But all of them, to one degree or another, sought to maintain a sense of decency and dignity in the only office designed by our Founders to represent the whole American nation. That high honor chastened most of them in their rhetoric, inspired some to soaring leadership, and drew at least an outer boundary of public speech for presidents.
This ethic of presidential rhetoric isnt some prissy, schoolmarmish rule. It is a quintessentially American act of respect for the people of this country, an acknowledgment in the semi-formal diction of public pronouncements by presidents that the power any president holds does not, in fact, belong to him. Its ours. He works for us.
But Donald Trump is a megalomaniac, and he acknowledges no boundaries. That is disgraceful, of course. It is also dangerousand exhausting. We are all living inside the mind of this broken, ferocious man.

Another Trump pardon to make Trump look less guilty
WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump pardoned Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar and his wife in a federal bribery and conspiracy case on Wednesday, citing what he called a weaponized justice system.
Trump, who has argued that his own legal troubles were a partisan witch hunt, said on social media without presenting evidence that Cuellar and his wife, Imelda Cuellar, were prosecuted because the congressman had been critical of President Joe Bidens immigration policies.
Trump, a Republican, said in a social media post that Cuellar bravely spoke out against Open Borders and accused Biden, a Democrat, of going after the congressman and his wife simply for speaking the TRUTH.
Federal authorities had charged Cuellar and his wife with accepting thousands of dollars in exchange for the congressman advancing the interests of an Azerbaijan-controlled energy company and a bank in Mexico. Cuellar is accused of agreeing to influence legislation favorable to Azerbaijan and deliver a pro-Azerbaijan speech on the floor of the U.S. House.
