Consumers now face "tariff surcharges" for some goods as companies pass along costs

(CBS News) The Trump administration's volley of tariffs has U.S. companies scrambling for ways to absorb — and if possible avoid — the added business costs. Some enterprises, from small businesses to nationally recognized brands, have already announced higher prices, citing President Trump's tariffs. Others, from footwear companies to furniture brands, are warning consumers to brace for increased costs. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told CNBC Thursday that he expects the tariffs to lead to higher prices on a host of consumers goods, noting that the the site's third-party sellers are likely to pass on tariff-related costs.

Egg prices increase to record high despite Trump's predictions and bird flu outbreak slowing

(AP) U.S. egg prices increased again last month to reach a new record-high of $6.23 per dozen despite President Donald Trump’s predictions, a drop in wholesale prices and no egg farms having bird flu outbreaks. The increase reported Thursday in the Consumer Price Index means consumers and businesses that rely on eggs might not get much immediate relief. Demand for eggs is typically elevated until after Easter, which falls on April 20.

Trump Threatens to Imprison Critics -- and Bondi Might Do It

(NY Intelligencer) Donald Trump’s presidential payback tour rages on, and now it’s personal. It’s one thing to target multibillion-dollar law firms, universities, and media outlets for organizational retribution; those efforts, aimed at stifling and punishing any criticism or dissent, are reprehensible in their own right. But now Trump is going after individual private citizens, using the might of the executive branch to potentially throw his detractors in prison.

'Near-limitless authority': Trump reportedly moves to make sure GOP can't lose elections

(Raw Story) As Democrats look to midterms and beyond, President Donald Trump has issued an executive order that a new column from The Atlantic claims could alter the outcome of future elections. Elon Musk lowers DOGE's estimated savings -- again

(Business Insider) Elon Musk said on Thursday that the White House DOGE office would cut close to $150 billion in government spending for the 2026 fiscal year, lowering the ambitious targets he had for President Donald Trump's signature effort to reorganize the federal government. During a Fox News interview last month, Musk said the DOGE office would be very close to cutting $1 trillion in spending before his time in the government is up.

The Manufacturing Boom We Already Had

(American Prospect) There’s something particularly galling about the Trump economic policy, beyond the tariff whipsawing, beyond the potential for financial collapse. For me and others, it’s that the very goal Trump claims to be after—to curtail the mercantilist rise of China and allow for a more balanced and diversified supply chain—was already being addressed, and achieved, by the last administration. Under Joe Biden, the government encouraged advanced manufacturing in critical and emerging industries, using subsidies, advance market commitments, and even tariffs to allow them to build and grow. And even ardent free-traders agree that it was successful.

Trump brags in Oval Office that his billionaire pals made a killing in stocks after he pulled the plug on tariffs

(The Independent) Stocks jumped more than 7 percent Wednesday within minutes of his announcement suspending the tariff for 90 days. The market ultimately closed more than 9 percent higher. At the White House Oval Office that day, Trump pointed to a pair of billionaire visitors. “He made $2.5 million, and he made $900 million! That’s not bad!” Trump said, pointing to financial investor Charles Schwab and then NASCAR team owner Roger Penske. The men were part of a visiting guest contingent of mostly racing notables. Schwab is estimated to be worth $12.9 billion and Penske $5.6 billion.

Ketanji Brown Jackson is not holding back against Trump or her fellow justices

(CNN) In a case this week, she condemned the Trump administration’s efforts to “whisk people away to a notoriously brutal, foreign-run prison,” adding, “For lovers of liberty, this should be quite concerning.” A few days earlier, she derided the Department of Education’s “robotic rollout” of a policy cancelling teacher grants and its “highly questionable behavior.” As she has skewered the Trump team, she has criticized the conservative Supreme Court majority that sides with it, referring this week to her colleagues’ “fly-by-night approach.”
