It is an over the air, (OTA,) dvr. It uses a traditional TV antenna and an external hard drive to record TV shows. The newest version of their software includes streaming channels, (kind of limited at this time,) that you can also record. The Nvidia Shield is a dedicated streaming device. They have a wide variety of streaming channels and can even play media files over the local network if you have access to DVD ripping tools.

The selection of streaming channels grows all the time. One benefit of a streaming device like the Shield is they will also run Android apps, so it will also run any service you decide to pay for, (Amazon, Netflix, etc.) Playstore has a bunch of streaming apps that offer free and paid content. It's all up to you. Pay for what you want.
