It is sweet. Alan Rickman’s character is a fool. His wife is not. The writer, whoever the actor is, is a sensitive soul who falls in love with a Portuguese girl — and she loves him back. The little boy whose stepfather is a widower falls in love with a same age American girl, and boy and dad figure out how he can win her heart.

There’s a lot of age-appropriate pairing-up. Anyway it has grown on me.

My favorite seasonal movie is The Hogfather, by Terry Pratchett. Only watch it if you are okay with a magical and very pagan take on the Winter Solstice.
