didn’t hit 8th when he pitched is they didn’t want to embarrass light-hitting shortstop Dal Maxvill, so they kept Maxvill at 8. Gibson is one of the overlooked great athletes of the 20th Century as he was a star basketball player at Creighton, played for the Globetrotters, then had a very rocky start to his MLB career due to the racism of Cardinals’ manager, Solly Hemus.

When Johnny Keane took over for Hemus he realized that Gibson had been underutilized and disrespected. From that point forward, Gibson became the dominant pitcher of the 60s, and was a very capable hitter in spite of limited at bats.
